Ok, now I have my career choices down to just two (Thank god). I’m already halfway through my associates in psychology and I think I might go all the way (Get my masters then doctorate), but i’m 27 and need money now. Don’t get me wrong I would love to help people because i’ve been through a lot in my 27yrs on this earth, but I need money. From 2005-2006 I graduated from a trade school to become an electrical apprentice and get my hours under a licensed electrican so I could become an electrican. From 2007-2008 I applied for a lot of jobs day and night, got a couple of interviews, but the jobs were to far and all the places and people I applied to wanted more than 1 year of experience. To top it all off, my trade school screwed me because at the last minute they decided to not give us an internship because of insurance reasons. So in 2009 I decided to go to college for psychology because I figured I can help people, but it doesn’t look like helping people will pay the bills now or when I do get my masters. Plus, I seen a couple job openings for electrical apprentice and I now know a licensed electrican who can boost my hours even though It’s been a long time since i’ve wired anything or bent pipe to run commercial electrical circuits. Im 27 and I need to make a final choice and stick with it. I’m also affraid of heights, but my therapist said he would work with me on it if I decide to persue electrical again. I’m sooooo confused?????

I’m taking a class next year as a Senior called Vocational. They have a variety of classes, but the ones that interest me are Carpentry and Electricity/Plumbing. If I take the class next year, I only have to go another year and a half and I’ll get my certificate in whatever I choose to become an apprentice in it. Both are kind of equal to me, I really enjoy building things out of wood (mostly furniture, but I can handle building houses), and I enjoy trying to fix circuit boxes and what not whenever there’s a problem with my house’s electricity…. Which one pays more / would be a better career as in job availability, versatileness, pay?…..

P.S. I’m asking in the R&S section because that seems to be the only place where people actually answer questions…Bear with me..

I am going to find out soon if I will be offered an apprenticeship for IBEW. I would like to know a few things before I completely commint to this as my future..

After the apprenticeship is over, am i guaranteed to make a certain amount of money per hour or is it up to the company i work for? (their website says by the fifth year I’ll make 37 an hour as an apprentice but what about after the aprenticship is over?)
Is it hard to get at least 40hrs a week? (i’m worried anout not having consistent work)
what percentage of my pay goes to union dues?
Any advice from anyone that has gone through the apprenticeship?

and any other tips, advice, or information would be greatly appreciated!

I am fairly certain I’ll enjoy the work I am just worried that I’ll bust my butt for five years only to end up taking jobs that only pay 15-20 bucks and hour. Are union electricians required to make a minimum per hour or what cause I can’t find a direct answer anywhere on google

I am a high school student about to start Tenth Grade in South Australia. I have considered various career paths and decided on an apprenticeship. I think that while University degrees are a definite advantage in the workplace, they are too expensive, and take far too much time to get. With an apprenticeship, I could start studying while in school. I feel that I would have a reasonable chance of getting into a course. My grades are usually straight A’s with one or two exceptions, my behavior is perfect, I am polite, etc. My only problem is my trouble with being social, I don’t like talking, and I have trouble making eye contact and using body language.

What I want to ask is; What are the most profitable trades to get an apprenticeship in?
I believe that I will study to become an electrician, I enjoy working with electricity and am interested in the subject, but would like further input.

How would I get an apprenticeship?

Is learning a trade a better choice than simply going to an office and working a 9-5 job?

I would appreciate any and all input from people who are/have taken apprenticeships or apprentices.

I am currently an electrician in a non-union shop. I may have a chance to join the local electrical union. I am a little torn as I have worked in my current shop for 8 yrs. I like my current situation, the only downside is the pay could be better. I like my shop , i like the guys I work with. My boss trusts me and leaves me on jobs and I make a lot of day to day decisions on jobs. I work in the neighborhood i live in and have use of the company resources for any sidework i get, so i have a lot of freedom that way. i live in NYC so i could even try for my own Masters Electricians license soon.
I may have an opportunity to join local 3 ..as an apprentice. and start over in terms of pay but gain all the other benefits of being in the union. I am not sure what i should do if i am accepted into the union. Any thoughts?

Electricians in my state make 42$ an hour with lots of overtime and double time. They mostly work during the peek season and enjoy a lot of time off in the winter (they can make an average annual income in 3-4 months time). If I do an apprenticeship I will actually learn great skills and be fully prepared to do the job once I graduate. In my state an apprentice starts out at 21$ hour and gets a 2 dollar raise every 1000hrs of work (80000 hr apprenticeship, 5 years). I will get paid to learn. I will learn tangible skills that I can use for the rest of my life (build my own home). I won’t have to work all year and can enjoys my winters off (winter home somewhere tropical I think). I would start a pension as soon as I start my apprenticeship. I will have a “cadillac” health-care plan. (Union IBEW)
OR. I can get into debt in college. Graduate with very little tangible skills. Have to start out at the bottom of the workforce. Sit in an office all year round. Waste my life. No real fun for a high energy life-loving guy.

What do you think?

I dont have any previous experience in the trade at all. Most I could do is wire a plug… But the guy had no problem with that. He wants to see how I get on with the team and am I able for it.

This question was deleted as I was forming an answer to the question.
I think the answer is strong enough to allow the question to be presented.
CHILD SUPPORT, or **** IT?
Well my mom took the child support card from me just because I got a SUMMER job, which ends in two weeks, but anyways its mines, and without me she wouldn`t be gettin it, and if she doesn`t give me back the card I wanted to know if there is anyway that I could go to court and have them cancel it, cause im an 18 year old senior and I need money, not just 400 dollars every ****** two weeks from a summer jobs, and not to mention that I have to get clothes cause I hardly have any and shoes and this is jsut ****** up, I need to know what can i do reall???

Hello, reall

You are doomed.

Read over your own question.
At 18 you are offering yourself to the working world?
Your question shows that you are not ready to be an adult.
Good clothes and shoes are always available. Start at GOODWILL they have everything you need to survive.
You are living at home, You are not paying rent, CHILD SUPPORT will only last until you are 18 or when you leave school. You are 18 so the only way to continue the CHILD SUPPORT is for you to stay in school.
Your question shows that you have not learned enough in 18 years to be accepted in any University, College or Junior College. Your future has a 90% failure rate. Probably with time in jail within the first year of graduation, if you graduate.

You only have a 10% chance of making it.

Male or female here is your best chance.

Let you mom have the CHILD SUPPORT money.

It is time for you to get your own as* in gear.

Construction is the only field you are qualified for.
Your question shows that anything requiring the use of written English is beyond your abilities. You did not even use spell check. Therefore construction is your start. I recommend becoming an Electrician. Electrician is the highest pay for the least amount of work. Volunteer to work the first two weeks for free to show the company you can be at work on time ready to do and to learn. Electricity is an excellent teacher. If you do it wrong you get one hell of a shock, to make you think harder about what you just touched. If you are really stupid and do not learn fast, then electricity will kill you and I need not write any more.

You will spend a minimum of four years learning the Electrical trade. The same time you were given by your fellow citizens to learn to be an adult during high school but which you waisted thinking that life is a free ride and there was nothing but play time ahead.

With your first pay check as an electrical apprentice you will either make or break the 80 years ahead of you.

First
Male or female buy a pack of condoms and learn how to use them.
The last thing the world needs is more people, who can not take care of themselves, having more children.

Second
Open an investment account. This may be the last thing on your mind.
Just do it. Without an investment account you will never succeed. This is the point I was NOT told and only learned after 30 years of working hard. It does not matter who the account is with. You are not going to invest yet. How can you? You know nothing about investing.

Third
Do not give your mother any of your pay check. She does not know how to manage money, or you would not be in the sad state you are in.
You are living in a home. Your mother’s home. Start paying your own adult way. Chose a bill, The electric bill to start with. YOU pay that bill. You buy the money order, the stamp and the envelope and put it in a safe post office mailbox.
If you have any money left YOU go buy food for yourself. If you cook and clean up yourself then you need not buy your mother any food. If you are a deadly poor cook and you would like your mother to cook for you, you need to pay her to cook. Not with money but with the food list that she gives you to go to the store and buy the food yourself that she will cook. The store will show you how best to make every penny count.

Make sure you have enough left from your first pay check to buy the same high quality SCREW DRIVER that you saw the other electricians using. The master electricians will respect you more each week they see you show up ON TIME with one more Electrician Grade tool of your own.

DO NOT buy all your tools at one time. Good Tools are expensive and it will help you learn, if you ASK the Electricians you are working with, which tool you should buy next.
