Future in solar power as a career, where should I start?

By , August 19, 2010

So what research Ive been doing to help decide my future and my career, Im obviously looking for something reliable/long term and I want to make great money. Im pretty open for anything if there are better options that I just dont know about. But I feel like the demand is going to be more towards “go green” such as solar power. Is there an average pay for techicians in this line of work, or as for solar panels, or for any jobs related? I’m sure theres a wide range, but I’m clueless where to start and what all is involved. But what I do know is that solar power will be in higher demand as time goes, and I want a part in it. Thanks for your responses.

it depends on where you live

If the past few decades are any indication the biggest money is not going to be made in a “green” industry. It will be more likely to be made in a field where you have to either sell your soul, risk your life, or do something that few others want to do or can do. Being able to turn your services into a great deal of money for someone else is a big help.

But money may not be the only criteria for making life’s choices and an adequate living at something that is needed without taking risks to your soul or body may also be a good way to go. Solar energy will be a rapidly expanding field. It may also be a risky field. As technology changes there may be technological dead ends. It may be very exciting. But you would be wise to keep educating yourself. This will promote your adaptability.

Any level of electrical background you could acquire would probably be helpful. Beyond this any knowledge of magnetism you could acquire would also be helpful. Solar thermal applications are likely to be just as useful as solar electrical applications. Some knowledge of heat dynamics would be helpful here.

Depending upon where you presently are in your studies a general background in good self study techniques would also be helpful. To this end Mortimer J Adler’s book, “How to Read a Book” could be very useful. Good luck.

ur right. the trend is certainly encouraging. perhaps you should ask universities and colleges (that offer degrees in this area) about market demand and pay scales. They’ll guide you very well. At the following link, you’ll find a list of about 10 or so reputable institutes/uni/colleges that may help you.
