How Much Will It Cost To Convert This Building To Run On 100% Solar?

By , June 22, 2010

I’m a student working on a project for my school and I want to convert a building to run on solar power.
The building’s monthly usage is 4897 Kilowatt hours. I’d like a system capable of producing 5000 KwH’s per month.
Please include sites. :) Thank you so much!

  1. Adam B says:

The rule of thumb is $20,000 per 3kW installed. This will produce approximately 400kwh per month.
So you are looking at about $250,000 to produce 5000 kwh per month

Adam B’s numbers are a pretty good estimate. Obviously, it’s going to be a lot of money. Something you may want to consider in your assessment is if there’s any cheaper way to reduce the energy use of the building so you need less solar. Cutting down lighting needs by 100 kWh is usually cheaper than generating 100 kWh of solar. Solar is really a last resort AFTER you’ve reduced your consumption as much as possible.
