I need to know what type/size electrical wire to use to power transformer for automatic gate.?
The manual says transformer uses 16 gauge multistrand pvc coated wire for direct burial. My problem is the gate is 350 feet from utility pole/my service box and if I am going to run that far I would like to have several outlets along the way for seasonal decoration and a couple of lights by the gate. The installation is in rural area, no codes, I figured I would install about 5 outlets in weatherproof covers, the outle for transformer, and two light boxes. The transformer puts out 12vdc that keeps deer feeder battery charged.
First even out in the country you still have codes.
I think the 16 gauge they are talking about is on the load side of your transformer.
Are you powering a gate? If yes I would need to know the power demand of the gate. Rule of thumb when running wire long distances, every 100 ft. you increase the size of the wire. So if you needed 20 amps of power I would pull #8 minimum.

In addition to the wire size you are concerned about, the direct burial cable or any conduit except rigid steel must be buried 36 inches deep, unless it is a driveway in which case you need to add a concrete cover. You should call a qualified professional electrician to do the work.
