If The Whole World Used Green Electricity, Would Global Warming Stop.?

By electric, February 2, 2010

If the whole world used green electricity in the next 20 years would global warming stop and will it rain a lot again, because i love it when it rains at night and you are in a nice comfy warm bed, but it doesn’t happen as often as it did before.

Unfortunately not. The CO2 already released by human activities will remain in the atmosphere for centuries, continuing to warm the planet. However, an immediate switch to emissions-free energy would massively limit the damage we’re causing, and give the planet a fighting chance of recovering.
Also, electricity production (particularly dirty coal) is only one way in which we’re heating the planet. We’re gradually destroying the Amazon, a vital component of the planetary system (you could think of it as the planet’s lungs), and burning up peat bogs in Borneo, releasing millions of tons of methane (which is worse than CO2), to name just two things.
The damage we’ve already inflicted seems to have set off what scientists call positive feedback processes – for example, as the arctic ice melts, the dark sea absorbs more of the sun’s heat, which heats the area up further. Or as the Siberian permafrost melts, it releases methane, which causes more heating.
So looking at all these things together, many scientists are now coming to the view that switching to green sources of energy, which is of course essential if we are to survive, will not be enough – we need to find ways of taking CO2 out of the atmosphere. This is a very difficult task, some would say impossible, but ideas are being put forward. Two interesting examples are reforestation and inducing blooms of phytoplankton in the oceans.

There is nothing wrong with the Earth’s weather and “green electricity” is a joke. Drive by a wind farm and not only will you see huge wind turbines cluttering up the landscape, but some of them will be out of service and have been for awhile, not to mention that wind turbines tap into the grid and use electricity.
Solar banks are the same way, we talk a good game about using them, but it’s a safe bet they are not maintained, and some of them are not producing electricity, or parts of them have failed because of weather conditions.

Nope. First of all, as the first answerer mentioned, there are still contributing factors, such as cows. They produce A LOT of methane!
Secondly. Global warming is caused because we have filled up our atmosphere with gasses that trap the heat from the sun. To STOP global warming, we need to somehow get all that stuff back out of the atmosphere. Unfortunately, we don’t really know how to do that at the moment…
I heard about one proposed plan as a worst case scenario. By that I mean, the Earth is starting to become uninhabitable because of the heat and we still have no solution. This plan would be to put massive clouds just above the atmosphere over the poles. This way, sunlight would be unable to get to the poles, thus the Earth would begin to cool, and we could have a few more years to work on a solution.
I really hope it doesn’t come to that though :(

no because global warming is a narural occurence, greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide and methane and produced naturally. at the moment scientists are not even sure whether global warming is happening because of humans or because of nature. however i think it is because of humans. and the whole world couldn’t switch to green electricty otherwise industry would decrease and countries would have to produce their own produts instead of leaving it to countrues like china who then get blamed for polluting the planet because they are making products for other countries

  5. tyrefing says:

I don’t have the relevant sources, but global warming is like a lag effect that will still continue on even if all of us convert to “green electricity” in the next 20 years. The exact length of time is still being disputed over, but some scientists have already said that we have went past the point of no return where global warming is going to spiral out of control.
And I love rainy days too :(

  6. Bullseye says:

This will NEVER happen– as soon as someone proposes solar power farms, this happens–http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2009/03/…
The environmentalist do not care about GW– they actually want to stop all further industrial development– and use GW as a calling card to secure financial support for their organizations. They WILL oppose every new power development regardless of how green it may be.

  7. wind m says:

Global warming can be arrested in some ways but very excessive use of electricity can still promote global warming.

  8. random person says:

No there are still cows and anyways it would be pretty difficult to stop global warming from happening.

  9. AJ ?TM says:

probably. but then again you have to get the chinese 2 agree, and they normally dont agree on anything we want to do…
    peace,love,AJ

  10. Matt D says:

no because even if we use green fuels e.t.c
there are still many components like cows whos gas are a mayor problem in many countries
    hope it helps
    :D

  11. JOHNNIE B says:

It would change nothing. GW only exist in the mind of the Left.

  12. Scorpio Wild Card says:

    Nope!

  13. Tanny F says:

    No.
    there are still cows
