John Howard Wants Nuclear Power In Currently Nuclear Free Australia, What Do You Think?
Do you agree or disagree? To what extreme? Will this single issue affect your vote.
If you disagree do you think we could generate more jobs by investing in solar power or is there some other alternative (geothermal, wind, tidal/wave)?
Non Australians most welcome to comment. Currently Australia has no nuclear power plants and perhaps some of the best access to sun (vast deserts), waves (we are surrounded by oceans), and hot rocks in the world.
The whole thrust of nuclear energy in Australia is built on potential profit, and has no environmental component. That industry says that Nuclear is pollution free, but this is wrong, as we still have NO way to get rid of the spent fuel and other contaminated waste. John Howard has, I believe, a hidden agenda here.
I would vote against him if there were no other cause to do so. That’s how strongly I feel about it.
There are many opportunities for geothermal power (there is already one outback town using a mild form of it, and it works well as base load power. There are ideal wave and tide sites all around the country – there’s thousands of kilometres of it. Solar and wind energy generation definitely does have the capacity to produce base load power, and it has been proven.
This country has the potential to be world leaders in alternative energy if it weren’t for that little bastard and his coal industry mates. The only reason I can see that these alternatives are not being promoted and developed is the political power of the coal industry.
Still, there’s an election soon, so we may not have quite so much to fight against.
But it will be a fight, assisted by the climate change which is going to create even more havoc than it already has.
Well West Australia that has a huge amount of uranium has moratorium on mining it and out Premier is not backing down.
The thing is if we mine it WA is responsible of disposing of the waste so creating problems for our future citizens.
If the other states want nuclear they should find a viable way to dump it in their backyard because we dont want or need to mine it.
For a country with so few people and so many natural elements we should looking at solar power, wind power and desalination plants.
One thing about WA we might get made fun of and called wait awhile but we starting doing something about the water crisis years ago just as well because in Howard’s grand water scheme he didn’t include WA.
I don’t have a problem with nuclear power. This issue has not affected the way I would vote.

John S,
No-one in the nuclear power industry has ever said “Nuclear is pollution free”.
Sure, invest in that renewable technology, but what is the point in ruling out options like nuclear?
It is sensible to consider all the options when the aim is to reduce carbon emissions.
hey , what the hell , whatever so , we (human-kind) are all lost anyway in against TECHNOLOGY EVOLUTION (and that’s not to mentioned about robotic creature of the future) ?.
As an American, I believe that America should build lots more Nuclear Power Plants. They are cleaner than coal. Currently Nuclear accounts for 20% of power generated in the US and 80% of the power generated in France. Worldwide there are 435 Nuclear Power Plants in 31 countries generating 17% of the electricity. Australia has nothing to fear and plenty to gain from Modern Efficient Nuclear Power.
if he persues this decision i feel it will affect his chances at the polls…with such a large country i believe we have the benefit and ability of using natural sources for power….
I’m not a crazy Greenie in that I’m crushing up egg shells to make compost and using windpower to generate electricity in my house or anything. But to tell you the truth if Green power was more easily and readily available for the average house… I would put it in.
Even if putting in a nuclear plant or whatever would generate hundreds of thousands of jobs, I would vote no. Ok… greater good and all that. But we have to take a stand here. We are really f-ing up our planet. The planet needs to go green before we use up all the resources and we poison ourselves. Does cancer actually come about naturally? Or is it all through our environment and things we are exposed to whether it be telephone wires or the hormones in chicken?
Detoxing is sooo popular in diets and health fanatics nowa days. But why isnt detoxing our planet just as popular?
We need to start looking into every possible green alternative. Australia has soo much sun that is every house had a solar panel. There wouldnt be a power problem. And hello? Why not set up some wind power plants in the dessert or sun power plants or something where the space doesnt matter?
- Aussie living in Greece concerned about BOTH countries when it comes to the enviroment.
