Skilled, LEGAL immigration, whats the problem? An educated answer based on economic theory will be appreciated.

READ THIS FIRST!!!! No ignorant, racist answers pls.

So at the moment in Australia, there is a skills shortage. Mainly skills are needed for trade work (like plumbers, electricians, builders etc) and Australia is short of this.

What the government has done has done is to implement LEGAL, skilled immigration, mainly importing skilled immigrants from overseas to do these jobs. Of course there has been public backlash. Some Australians are claiming these LEGAL immigrants are ‘stealing jobs’.

How can they be ‘stealing jobs’ when they are here LEGALLY and only doing the jobs that need filling? Can someone pls explain in ECONOMIC terms if they are actually stealing jobs if they are here LEGALLY?
Isn’t just based on supply and demand of the labour market? In economic theory, can anybody claim that they ‘own’ certain jobs in the labour market?

An educated answer based on economic theory, will be appreciated.
Dreamwhip, the government is paying these workers less than the Australian citizens. But it is still LEGAL under the Industrial Relations law here.
Rose g, I asked for an educated answer.

Judging by your incoherent sentences it doesn’t seem you actually even graduated high school. The lack of sentrence structure does not illlustrate what you are trying to point out well. It is difficult to know what you are actually trying to say because of this.

People feel that because they live in a certain place they are entitled to the jobs in that place. Unfortunately, with immigration going on in many countries this is no longer a guarantee for citizens.

I could go on for days about this one but I will say that LEGAL immigration has NEVER been under question or a concern. LEGAL immigration enriches the USA in many ways. It is ILLEGAL immigration that is causing such alarm. It is unfortunate that the minute anyone starts to discuss immigration, people always ASSUME they know where the speaker is going before they have finished their sentence.

As to skilled legal immigration. If and only if the jobs cannot be filled by citizens or the LEGAL IMMIGRANT should not be paid less, not even by one dime. That way, the employer would not be encouraged to employ one over the other.

I am going to give an answer based soley on the facts you presented. No. they are not stealing jobs from the residents of Australia. (1) as you hypothet says they are in that country legally and for a legal purpose and they are fulfilling that need.
    (2) if there truly are no skilled workers in the are or profession in which the immigrants have been given legal (either permant or temporary) legal status, then the immmigrants are in essence “citizens” entiteled to full and equal protection of the law”

Now let me throw a curve into your scenario. Is there truly a lack of skilled workers in this area, or is this specific trade one that is offering skilled citizens of Australia work, but at inadequate pay? If so then the government is cicumventing their right to work by immigrating people from poorer countires who are willing to work for far less pay just to be allowed admitance. So to answer you question with an educated answer as you asked I would need more facts about the pay being offered and pay be paid to the immigrants and a breakdown on how much pay has been the norm in this proffesion or trade for the past ten years.

There are 12 million illegal immigrants in this country in addition to the ones that government programs are allowing to fill shortages. You saw the pictures of masses of people sneaking across the border. They are being moved in trucks and trains and vans into inner cities in the north. Our state patrol in Nebraska have stopped vans with as many as 22 people piled in, on their way to places like Chicago. They have been discoverd dead in abandoned trucks and freight cars. Sanctuary cities protect them and even provide jobs for them. When I was in Los Angelos last year many businesses had spanish signs. I felt like I was in latin america. English is our official language. Why don’t these buisnesses use it? The same goes for chinatown and others that display their language on their enterprise. It encourages immigrants not to learn our heritage and respect our laws. Economics is not the answer,it is only the tip of the ice berg. The government helps finance abortion and now we need workers. We have aborted over 40 million babies. We are reaping the injustice we have sown. Thank you New World Order. Read the bible. It says you lose.

The Australians that are skilled in these fields will get a higher salary if there is a shortage of skilled labor, because companies will have to compete for their labor. If the labor shortage is rectified, then the value of the labor will go down. As the supply of a commodity goes up, its value decreases. Skilled labor is no different.

I used to agree with you, before I learned more about how skilled visas are used in the US. Even under the PERM standard where the jobs are supposed to be offered to Americans first, there are huge scams to make it look like they are looking for Americans, but they advertise for an IT executive job in say, Woman’s Weekly. A large law firm video counseling on how to do this and saying ‘after all, what we are NOT looking for is a willing American worker’ hit the internet this year, for example. Then there is how H1B visas have been used by Indian outsourcing companies. Then there is the fact that those here on skilled visas take jobs at 80% of what Americans are getting, leaving particularly the older and more expensive workers without jobs.

Fix that, and I’m with you, so long as our infrastructure, schools, etc. are compensated and can take the inflow. Otherwise, I’m not.

O.K. Like you I don’t want a bunch of boos . But the fact is WHY isn”t there any education,,, for these jobs needed in your Country ? Big question
Next comes from the same in U,S,A, we have the same problem , but not so called Skilled labor , Well I will speak for what I feel is wrong in the u.s.a. , most Americans are LAZY
But it is still a job, picking strawberry’s etc,, cleaning a motel , prep work for a Resturaunt ? its still a job ,They take a pay ck home . Why aren’t Americans working ?
We have the best the schools and more doors open then any other country ,, WE ARE LAZY ,,, Schools offer classes and free Collages ,, education is very much available to us
Now in Australia, do they have the same colleges ? to teach their own , for the jobs needed to be filled?

Thats where it all starts ,, your country might lack the education to teach it own to do the work , and here we have the education , but no one wants to do the jobs

Why don’t we combine the two,, WE have skilled workers out of jobs , and we need non educated workers to do our jobs ..
Actually the farm workers do have skills , they have to know allot about produce ///etc,, So not to take away from our leagle people working in the U,S,A, They work hard but they get about 8.00 /9 00 a hour ,, So what is your country s pay scale for what you need to fill your work force?

I think All of it comes down to how you where brought up ,, and what the country can offer their own people , to make a descent living ..
I have a neighbor who makes 16,00 a hour,,,,a job in my eyes ,, but he says he is worth more , So he sits at home waiting for the job to come to him ,, I think that is wrong ,
I guess it depends on how hungry you are ????He wont travel 60 miles to put in a 12 hour day . at $ 16 .00 a hour
I would camp out to make that kind of money , and he doe’s have a travel trailer to do it ,,,,,,,,But he says no way , I want to be closer to home ,, so he starves half the time… Spoiled I think he is

bottom line is why is Australians not teaching their own these jobs ??????????/
