I am not sure if I can afford to go to a 4 year university and was considering taking community college courses instead. Will this be a waste of my money? What courses should I take?

Right now, I am a junior in high school. I love physics,and math. The thing is I cant decide whether I should become/major in computer software engineering, computer hardware engineering, or electrical engineering. I really want to be more of an electrical engineer or maybe computer hardware engineer because I love messing around with electronic things and computer such as opening them up and looking around and learning all sorts of stuff about circuits and then putting them back together again. But then,I hear that computer software engineering pays quite well but I dont like coding and staring at computer screen and typing and all. I love “physical stuff.” My parents want me to be a computer software engineer but I am quite vacillating. My first choice is electrical engineering though. I want to know whether electrical engineering would pay a lot. I dont have to stay in silicon valley.I can travel anywhere in the USA or even other developed nations as long as I make good money and like what I am doing and having a good life. So please help me!!

This week there was an article in the New York Times says the pay gap has widen between men and women with four year college degrees. One of the things not mentioned is the large number of men quitting the jobs they went to college for to enter the much more lucrative blue collar field. Starting incomes for certified blue collar workers is running 25% higher than that for for college graduates. A certified electrician, with just six months training, has a starting income of over ,000. I had an executive from a trucking company in my taxi cab and he said that nearly half of those driving for him had college degrees.

http://www.nytimes.com/2006/12/24/business/24gap.html?_r=1&oref=slogin

It is more clear that Blue Collar worker earn more than College grads and when comparing incomes, they should exclude men taking jobs that a majority of women refuse to do.

Well I’m a senior, in NYC, and next year I’m supposed to go to college. Since my relationship with my family (mom and dad) hasn’t been the best I decided I wanted to go out of state simply because I want to get out of the house. However, over the christmas break I remembered that before simply telling myself “I have to go to college,” I had dreams of becoming something of an actor, or maybe a singer. How am I supposed to follow those dreams while I am away? I planned on majoring in Electrical Engineering just for the fact that it’s a career. Also, since I am a slacker of a student, I planned on applying to colleges I think I can easily get in to; University of Kansas, State University of North and South Dakota (2 different universities), and others similar to those, location-wise. However if I were to go to those place, those universities, how am I supposed to follow my dream? I realized that I live in New York City, a great place to pursue a career in acting or singing, or both! So what am I to do? This is what I came up with;

1) At first I didn’t want to go to college, I simply wanted to become an electrician. To do that I’d have to find an apprenticeship with a contractor and just..work and learn at the same time. I’m thinking of actually doing that. I am going to look for a contractor with available apprenticeships and go for it.
2) Even though I’d be working full time as an apprentice I think I may apply to Laguardia Community College and study Electrical Engineering part-time, and work full-time as an apprentice.
3) Since I will be working and studying, I’d basically have the money to take acting/singing classes on weekends. Since I live in NYC, I have a great selection of teachers and what-not, I could go to casting calls, auditions, all WHILE studying and working.

So that is basically my plan. What do you think? Should I stick to it? This way I could earn a degree, transfer after 2 years, AND pursue my dream at the same time.

I graduated from high school a year ago and during that summer I went to work for a family friend who is an electrician. At first I thought it was all complicated but it is actually easy work. I may not be an expert but I can wire a whole house. The guy told me that in order to get certified I have to take some college courses. I am thinking why? Shouldn’t experience be enough. I mean as long as you learn the city requirements and learn from an electrician how to do the work, why is it necessary to take college to be a certified electrician? Or is there a way around this? I have nothing against college except that I don’t have money to pay for it and here where I live they can be real a holes when it comes to financial aid and who actually gets it. I live in a racist town.
