Running from primary power pole to provide 240/120 volt power to my barn about 250 feet away. Aim to do this w/o a transformer. Can it be done? If so, what type or nomenclature of wire do I need? Approximately how much will it cost? Is underground better?
I’m tapping into the power pole that powers my my house. One of the options they (electric company) gave me was to put a meter loop on the pole and leave it up to me to run power to the barn 250 feet away. They are restricted to placing a transformer every 150 feet in order to guarantee appropriate power (no less than 6 volt drop). That is costly and I’m asking to see if there exists some wiring I can run that will not drop the voltage over that length. It may be cost prohibitive if there is. My other option is to have the electric company put in a power pole with primary power and a transformer nearer the barn, then run service power to a meter at the barn. That will cost me around 00. I may be stuck doing that. I’m looking for an alternative that is less costly, safe and effective, that’s all. I don’t know if the other option is even feasible but it was suggested by an engineer with the electric company. Any thoughts?
Hey, thanks. How enlightening! You’re right… I don’t know what I’m talking about. That’s why I’m here… to learn. I’m not trying to scab power. In fact I’m working with the power company who is giving me several options. I’m just trying to figure out the best one for me. There will be a 200 amp power panel in the barn. I’ll have a certified kitchen in there with steam kettle cookers. Only one will be an electric. The others propane. WIll have a 50 amp connection for the motor home however and another 30 amp plug for an outside RV spot. Other than that it will be shop tools and air compressors and lights and fans. Oh yes, and the beer fridge. There will be a couple of 240 outlets and about ten 120 outlets. The barn is 50 X 80 feet with 16 foot walls rising to 22 feet at the cable. What type lighting is the best for optimum light while remaining as economical as possible? Thanks for the great responses.

I’m taking up the course for EST (Electronic Systems Technician) and I’m a little worried. I took the cpat test and I got a 134, but the thing is I believe that they passed me the hell of it just to get more money/people in the program. I know I did ok on the reading and language part, but the math I know for a fact that I didn’t good in since half of the time I made guesses. So I’m wondering if what type of math will I run into in this course so I can prepare.

Thanks
I’m good at computers also so will that help?
