…athletes all across the country.

The Quinnipiac University Women’s Volleyball team is suing its Hamden, Conn. school after university officials eliminated the team in favor of a more cost-effective competitive cheer squad.

However, the volleyball team is arguing that cheerleading cannot be considered a university sport under Title IX.

An activity is considered a sport under Title IX if it has coaches, practices, competitions during a defined season, and a governing organization. The activity also must have competition as its primary goal—not just the support of other athletic teams.

The case goes to trial in U.S. District Court in Bridgeport, beginning Monday.

Linda Carpenter, a professor emerita at Brooklyn College and co-author of the book “Title IX,” said the women’s sports community is watching the case closely.

“These are significant issues and a significant case,” Carpenter said. “It provides a case, whichever way it goes, that can work its way up the judicial food chain, and ultimately provide a precedent.”

“The outcome of this case could have a chilling effect on women’s athletics programs if cheerleading is deemed a sport,” said Mary Jo Kane, director of the Tucker Center for Girls and Women in Sports at the University of Minnesota and a Title IX expert unaffiliated with the case.

“No one wants to denigrate cheerleading, but should it be considered sport at the expense of legitimate women’s competitive team sports? It’s a question of equality,” Kane said. “How would people react if the school cut a men’s sport like baseball or lacrosse and used those funds for a male cheerleading squad?”

The women volleyball players say a men’s team would never lose funding in favor of cheerleading and the players are the subjects of sex discrimination.

“The Student Plaintiffs allege that Defendant’s ongoing sex discrimination in the operation of its varsity athletic program violates Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972,” the students said in their lawsuit.

I’m considering going back to technical school for carpentry. I currently live in New Jersey and there’s a technical school called Triangle Tech in Bethlehem, PA which is over the bridge in PA from where I currently live. They offer the course that I’m interested in however… I’m moving to Hedgesville, WV in 3 weeks. I’ve done some google searches for technical schools around the area. The only thing I’ve found is the local vocational school which is James Rumsey Vocational school. After checking their curriculum it isn’t on the list. When I search further it shows online studies for the course. I’d rather not take an online course for something that requires the hands on experience that a carpenter would need to learn. You can not convince me other wise. Basically, I’m looking to find a tech school similar to Triangle tech within a 30 mile radius of where I’ll be staying at in Hedgesville. Thanks in advance

Frank
Thanks for the info Dottie, I gave them a call today and unfortunately they have no useful information for me in that department. For the other answer below Dottie. If you read my question you’d see that I didn’t say a 1 mile radius. That in fact I have done a 30 mile radius and I haven’t come up with anything. I’ve even called around to local schools down there to put me in the right direction. However, most schools are only interested in you learning from them that they will not put you in the right direction only upsell which results in a hang up. Question still open for those that can help.

He said that the “plumbing” is easy and boring, but the real stuff to learn about are things like how males and females often perceive what a kiss means differently, amongst other things. He was right, the plumbing was not as useful as the parts where the teacher described gender relations. I guarantee you that there’d be much less need for a forum like this if gender relations was actually taught,….let alone taught properly.
