Union Plumber??? I’m thinking about trying to get into the Plumbers Apprenticeship Program.?

By , August 14, 2010

I’m 25 year old women and think it will be a little weird considering most likely I will be the only women in the class. I am really considering doing it. If you have any info on Union Plumbing or Women Plumbers that would be excellent.

I also would love to know what is on the Test to get into the Union for Plumbers if anyone knows.

PS I am in California

    What class?

Do Americans not sit apprenticeships run by companies? In Scotland various companies run apprenticeships, combining on-the-job training and some college work, while you get paid. The unions don’t run apprenticeships at all here (although obviously apprentices can join the unions).

Good luck though, it’s always cool to have women with trades.

I don’t know much about union plumbers as I am a plumber in florida. I am 24 and got into it about 5 years ago. I think plumbing is great and wouldn’t want to trade it for any other job. As for you being female that is a little different and some people may make fun of you or say rude things. Good for you for getting into plumbing and hope everything works out for you.

Have you talked to your local yet? If not, that would be the first step. They may be able to help you out with a little bit of background on the exam. There are quite a few women in the trades now. I’m a Union carpenter, and we have an organization within our Union called Sisters in the Brotherhood. I’m good friends with several of them in my local. We walk in a series of parades during the summer, and our parade committee had magnetic signs made for them that we display on the truck pulling the float. Once you pass the test and join the Union, get involved. There is a world of opportunity for you. Good luck!
