What is the starting salary for a Electrical Engineer?
I need answers from those who are Engineers or has a relative who is a Engineer. I graduate in about a year with a B.S. in EE and i have heard many salaries. What is the most current avg starting pay? What will increase my salary?
Not sure about wherever you are, but here in Canada, an EE straight from university would be making ~50k a year. I’d imagine the situation in the US to be about the same.
Really not bad eh?
your starting salary would be around $55,774. not too bad!
your experience and years at the job will increase your salary-
Let’s face it, it all depends on your GPA, which will pigeon hole you into a presumed level of performance. With a high GPA, the real good jobs will be within easy reach. With a mediocre GPA, you will find it difficult to land the “good paying ” jobs, or you may, but at a reduced figure from what people here are mentioning. It is also based on geographic region. Most EE jobs, especially if they are tied to a manufacturing facility are located in the sticks somewhere, so the median income in those areas will be kept artificially low by the local chamber of commerce in order to maintain the business incentives of the community.
The most current trend to keep salaries low by some companies in recent years involves hiring a large proprotion of foreigners on H1B visas at reduced pay rates. This helps keep the median salary curve low for everyone else.
So if you are interested in the field, do it because you love it. If you do it because of the pay, you will be disappointed at times, mostly when the pink slip blizzards come and go about every three years or so.
I started out considerably above those salaries 10years ago mainly because the market that I was in at the time had not met its demand.
You should try to get a feel if you like where your going to go and leverage that.
Consider if you care about distance to family. Its often a factor later on as your own family grows. Even if you don’t care initially, its not nice to be stuck 3000 miles away for the rest of your life because no one does that work near home. These trips back can be a significant hit to your pocket and time.
If you can do some research try to pick where the demand is not met. One of the ways to do this is by going for a masters specialty that fewer people have. However, there is usually a niche in some market that they just can’t find enough people and often get less qualified folks filling the gap.
Digital, analog , power then Oil service, medical imaging, what is next?
One thing I will say is that be careful about over estimating immature industries these can take a lot longer to evolve even if everyone says its the next big thing. I still haven’t see a good sign of the fusion industry but its been coming for a long time.
