here in central indiana, you’d probably start out at around $50,000/year with benefits. in california it’s probably much higher.

Quants (PhD’s in “mathy” type fields) make $125K-$150K to start in finance/NYC. I would expect CA to be less (since it is CA and it is not finance). So I would guess around $100K+options to start?

According to the US Dept of Labor:

Earnings for engineers vary significantly by specialty, industry, and education. The following shows the average starting salary offers for engineers by specialty and education, according to a 2005 survey by the National Association of Colleges and Employers:

    Electrical/electronics and communications:

    Bachelors: $51,888
    Masters: $64,416
    PhD: $80,206

Variation in median earnings and in the earnings distributions for engineers in the various branches of engineering also is significant. For engineers in electronics, earnings distributions by percentile in May 2004 are:

    Electronics, except computer:
    10%: $49,120
    25%: $60,280
    50%: $75,770
    75%: $92,870
    90%: $112,200
