Why Are So Many People Opposed To Nuclear Energy?
I’ve wondered this for a long time. There has never been an accident in the US that killed anybody. (No one died from Three Mile Island.) Coal energy, for instance, HAS killed a lot of people. Coal mines are little better than death traps.
Nuclear power is also much cheaper than coal, oil, and natural gas by dollars per megawatt-hour. And currently, water, solar, and wind power can’t get the job done.
Nuclear power will also help prevent global warming.
So, what’s everyone afraid of?
Everyone is afraid of:
1: accidental explosion
2: radiation
3: the disposal of nuclear waste
4: the similarity to nuclear weapons (the no nukes crowd)
5: Homer Simpson might cause a China Syndrome
For the record, I am for the increased use of nuclear energy, as I believe that most of those concerns have either been met, are not relevant, or are a risk worth taking when you consider the benefit.
democart’s fault again? Way to go hotpepe..
Because of an incident called Chernobel
They is one big drawback to nuclear power…if there is a accident tens of thousands will die as a result of the radiation.
There are a lot of positives for sure…it’s cheaper, enviromentally friendly, etc. But the chance of a meltdown is too high for most of us.
Chernobyl….
now, I know that’s not the same situation that’s going on in the U.S….
but when you start talking about putting it in someone’s backyard and then looking at the possible consequences IF things ever go wrong… it’s not good…
The whole nuclear waste thing. It takes centuries for that stuff to become safe. A lot of it has to do with health and environmental concerns. I personally think such groups are wrong.
I have written my congressmen about opening nuclear power plants. It is a source of energy and one we pretty much invented. It is a shame we are last in the use of it.
Democrats don’t want us to use nuclear energy. They also wont let us drill for oil in ANWR.
I believe the future energy needs of our country will necessitate the use of nuclear energy. The US is behind nearly every other country in the world. We should be building many plants, and none have been permitted since Three Mile Island.
I wouldn’t mind living near a nuclear power plant, as long as it’s not run by Homer Simpson.
Water reactors are nothing like the reactor in Chernobyl.
Water, solar, and wind power can’t supply the energy needs of America, but should be part of the solution.
they are just fools and dont know for what they think. jane fonda told ‘em it’s bad and they go with that. it’s probably the best cleanest energy source there is. it just boggles ones mind that we dont aggresively persue nuclear energy……i guess its all related to the backlash in the 80′s when legalities and law suites made nuclear plants impossible to build. just werent cost effective. yet another example of mis-guided leftist politics. and now we all pay. people are straight up idiots if cher tells them they are….f’n fools.
watch oprah one day. she is one of those hollywood liars that people base their opinions on. remember, we were all gonna die from bird flu? then there was mad cow disease, right? these hollywood types that people listen too are idiots and we are too for listening. barbara streisand thinks nukes bad….ugh…so do i…get real!
why not ? nuclear energy means death. did you see what happened Chernobyl nuclear accident
no feasible method of disposing of waste.
if more research was funded to find a real method of dealing with it, there wouldn’t be much of a problem.
All the knuckleheads keep blaming it on liberla this democrat that, but it isn’t a liberal’s fault. NO ONE wants that garbage in their back yards!
Its all fine and dandy to seal the stuff in cement and bury it, until an earthquake comes along.
Glowing in the dark?
Have a right-wing day.
Because nuclear power would actually allow us to lessen our dependence on oil, decrease the amount of pollution emitted (including that mythical bogeyman, Co2), and maintain our standard of living.
The malthusian moonbats can’t allow that to happen.
Future generations will pay dearly for the nuclear energy plants that we build today, nuclear waste stays active for more than 100,000 years. it is irresponsible for us to do what we are doing. The way future generations live their lives will be totally different from the way we do, the world population has to be reduced dramatically. We are over poluting the Earth. and radically depleting our resources. We will change or become extinct as a species. It is not more energy we need it is more common sense.
I live about 70 miles south of San Onofre nuclear power plant in San Clemente California. There are also an estimated 10 million people who live within 75 miles of it. Nobody seems to mind.
They believe the Eco-Terrorists.
Robert D, they cost a lot and give nothing.
Why not just improve water, solar, and wind power instead of using potentially fatal and environmentally unsound practices?
whatever dude. We don’t want no damn mutants runnin around in our backyards and that’s why we don’t like nuclear energy. There might not have been no accident yet, but the risk is very high. It’s like playin russian roulette. You might not die the first few times you play it, but eventually the odds WILL catch up with you.
Plus, it gives terrorists another internal weapon to use against us. I.e. they could take the plant hostage and induce a meltdown
That someone will use it during wars, and we’ll all die
